Doing-ordinary-things-extraordinarily is one value instilled into the minds and character of students in Don Bosco schools. This value of St. John Bosco of Sales encourages one to meet and encounter God in the ordinary. Be it cleaning the floor tiles, watering the plants, dusting off the machines or carving wood, we can meet God there. Thus, one must do everything in his capacity to make small things worth offering to God.
This message struck me and most of the participants during the chapter retreat last November. It reminds us that indeed we do not need to perform death defying sacrifices or ask for God to appear in our dreams and meet Him there. We can meet Him anytime, anywhere even in the ordinary.
Meeting Him in the ordinary circumstances does not also mean that we just do the ordinary things extraordinarily for Him expecting something in return. It can also mean offering the same to Him as a way of allowing ourselves to be used by Him as instruments. This mindset is equally important because this allows us to experience being used by the Holy Spirit to inspire others, to deliver a message to others, to give hope and faith to those who seem to have a hard time hoping and believing anymore.
That is why we firmly believe that our community is a gift from GOD for all of us. Here we allow ourselves to be used by Him in different ways through our mere presence in the activities, in sharing our blessings, in testifying for Gods love, providence and protection so that others will continue to hope and believe. Most of the times we forget that it was because of the inspiration of the brothers and sisters before us that made us decide to serve God and committed to be a part of this community.
