What Is Information Technology or IT?
Information Technology in the Computer World
All companies collect, process and store data. Data, and information, is necessary for the smooth operations of the company and for planning and control. With large amounts of data that a company has to deal with, it requires a less labour intensive and more efficient method of managing information. This is where technology is used. Thus, Information Technology is the direct use of technology to process data.
A more formal definition of IT would be :
"the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual, and numeric information by a micro-electronics based combination of computing and telecommunications."
The technology itself can be divided into computer and communications hardware and software.
